Asphalt Shingle Recycling

From Roof To Road

Asphalt Shingle Grinding (ASG) is the process of making Recycled Asphalt Shingles (RAS). RAS is produced by grinding asphalt roofing shingles to a small spec, generally under 3/8” to salvage the valuable asphalt and sand. Grinding asphalt shingles is a recycling effort which diverts materials from the landfill and can reduce road building costs.\

RAS is added to asphalt mixes in amounts generally under 5% to displace expensive virgin asphalt. The asphalt mix is used for driveways, parking lots and roads.

The Astec Advantage

Grinding asphalt shingles is highly abrasive, and often needs specialty equipment. Peterson’s horizontal grinders combined with high abrasive bits, water injection, and our Anvil Breaker Grate can create a product to your customer’s exact specifications.

Bits

Peterson High Abrasion Grinding Bits are the most cost-effective bits on the market for asphalt shingle grinding. The cast carbide technology combines the hardness of cemented tungsten carbide with the toughness of air-hardened steel to form a unique matrix that is extremely wear resistant in the most abrasive applications. Reinforced hard-face corners helps to maintain the original shape of this bit prolonging service life.

Grates

Successful asphalt shingle operators install a Peterson 1” round Breaker Grate in the #1 position. The chromium steel breaker bars on this grate act as additional anvils breaking up material and adding wear life to the grate. The Breaker Grate is followed by three 1” round AR500 grates in the #2, #3, & #4 positions. This combination of grates produces consistent end product sizing in a single pass for asphalt shingles.
