Astec CFO, Becky Weyenberg, shares her insight and experiences in honor of American Business Women’s Day

As we recognize National Business Women’s Day, our CFO Becky Weyenberg has some words of wisdom to help women navigate their careers.
When I joined Astec, the company had just started its evolution from operating as a set of subsidiary businesses into OneASTEC; it was just the challenge I was looking for. As I think back on my experiences, change and transformation are common themes. As we progress in our careers, our professional and personal lives become more complex but also more rewarding. I’d like to share some of the things I have learned along the way in hopes that it will inspire and help someone on their career journey.
Embrace Change. Change is an inevitable part of life. Learn to embrace it and think of it as a positive influence because change makes things possible.
I initially studied to become a nurse. However, when I returned to nursing school after taking some time to get married and start a family, I realized it wasn’t for me; that’s when I discovered accounting. Becoming a nurse had always been my plan, I had invested so much into it that it was daunting to think of changing directions at that late stage. It took some time with a growing family, but I graduated and started my career in accounting. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Take every opportunity. When presented with a new opportunity, take it and make the most of it.
I wasn’t one of those people who started out with the ambition to “climb the ladder” and reach certain career goals. It’s fine if you do; however, my approach has been to be open to new opportunities and make the most of them. Sometimes that meant switching roles or companies, taking on unfamiliar responsibilities or even moving to new locations. Taking on new opportunities meant I’ve never stopped learning. That approach has taken me far in my career and given me experiences I never dreamed of growing up in Wisconsin.
Surround yourself with good people. Create a diverse network around you of intelligent, supportive people – from work colleagues to family and friends.
We cannot accomplish anything in this world without the help of other people. First, my husband has often been the voice to offer the encouragement I needed to break out of my comfort zone. It hasn’t always been easy and we’ve both had to compromise over the years; however, he has always been supportive of me. Second, build and maintain that professional network of colleagues and mentors to offer you guidance along your path. Early in my career, I had a supervisor who acted as a mentor and she and I stayed in contact long after we moved on to different companies. Lastly, build a team with a diverse set of talents and experiences. Everyone comes to the table with a different perspective that will bring value.
Pay it forward. Share your knowledge and open new opportunities for others.
I was fortunate to have some good advisors throughout my career. As my career has progressed, I’ve made it a point to help others, particularly other women. It’s not always a formal mentorship, sometimes it’s simply listening and offering advice when needed. With my teams, I’ve always encouraged personal and professional development. I want them to have a successful career and life - whatever that may mean for them.
