The Astec Surface Miners are recognized for high performance and durability in hard rock and mass excavation situations. It is useful in a number of open-cut mining, selective mining, and quarry applications. It can quickly and efficiently cut haul roads and prepare sites for drill setup or building construction. The Astec Surface Miner utilizes a mechanical cutter drive for maximum efficiency. The cutter drum is driven through a hydraulic clutch to transmission belts and a planetary gearbox mounted in the drum. The machine's design relies on its weight and powerful engine to power through the most challenging digging conditions. Four-track steering (front, rear, crab, and coordinated) provides maneuverability on changing terrain. Four-track leveling allows precise excavation to final grade with laser or GPS controls. It cuts 10 feet (3 meter) wide and 26 inches (660 mm) deep in a single pass. In 2012, the company introduced the Astec DP 2000 Double Pumper, a high-pressure, high-volume double fluid pumper for servicing natural gas or petroleum wells. The 1,900-horsepower unit is capable of a maximum discharge pressure of 15,000 psi and a maximum flow rate of 19.6 bpm @3734 psi. It debuted to the public at the Permian Basin International Oil Show in Odessa, Texas, in October. The company is exploring the development of companion products for well servicing. All products are manufactured at the company's 360,000-square-foot facility in Loudon, TN. The company also produces selected components for several of the other Astec companies' product lines and selected other companies.
